Seven Weeks

Posted by | Pregnancy Lifestyle | No Comments

I started nesting too early. I still have seven weeks until I deliver and I’m completely ready for baby number three to arrive. I know I should feel reposed about this; however, I don’t know what else to do to satisfy my incessant desire to nest.

101 Things My Kids Have Taught Me: Lesson 100

Posted by | LENS, Lifestyle, Pregnancy Lifestyle | No Comments

100: If Toddlers Could Vote, Mickey Would Be President. And Toodles would be VP.  I’ve been a pretty strict mom when it comes to TV viewing, but somehow Mickey entered my son’s life and there’s been no turning back.  I can’t pinpoint the exact time when Jack discovered Mickey, because I’m not even sure how he discovered Mickey.  I’m thinking it had to be about six months ago, because that’s when I remember this obsession beginning.  The marketing geniuses at Disney somehow got to my son and now Mickey is everywhere.  How do I get Jack to eat all of his peas? I tell him, “Mickey eats peas.” All of the sudden it’s “MMMMM peas! I like peas!”  On the flip side, if we’re shopping and Mickey is on the packaging, Jack screams says, “I need this!” He’s two.  He doesn’t “need” anything – besides love and affection, and the…

Due In A Week

Posted by | Pregnancy Lifestyle | No Comments

Today marks the final week (fingers crossed) of my pregnancy.  I’ve mentioned before that I was past due and induced with both Jack and Charlie; I don’t think I’ll be one of the fortunate ones who gets to deliver even a few days early.  I’m bound to be past due, hot, and swollen until the very end! It’s 92 degrees and humid here.  I’m ready.  I spent the past weekend on Lake Michigan with my family trying to go into labor – eating pineapple, marching up and down stairs, taking walks, and plenty of ankle massages from my husband.  No luck.  I even tried paddle boarding! I’ve previously said that I feel like I’m missing out on the big, theatrical  ‘Honey, it’s time!’ kind of moment, but my OB assured me that’s not really how it happens.  After delivering two other babies by induction, at least I know what to expect…

Cord Blood Banking

Posted by | LENS, Lifestyle, Pregnancy Lifestyle | No Comments

When I was pregnant I heard a lot about cord blood banking and received many pamphlets from different companies offering cord blood banking services.  I didn’t know much about the process or the reasons to bank my baby’s cord blood, so I decided it was worth some research.   Cord blood is the blood that remains in your baby’s umbilical cord after delivery.   The blood is a source of stem cells that can be used in different medical treatments.  Cord blood and stem cells have been used to treat different ailments, including cancers, blood disorders, and immune diseases.  If needed in your child’s lifetime, he or she will always be a perfect match to the cord blood collected at delivery.  Cord blood banks cryogenically freeze the blood and hold on to it for you if ever needed.  When discussing the topic with other pregnant moms, someone told me that they weren’t…

Don’t Blink

This past week my family took a vacation and it just so happened to be Charlotte’s first birthday.  My baby is 1! Whoa.  Her first year of life went by waaaaay faster than I remember Jack’s going.  I try to look back to when I first brought her home from the hospital, and it all seems to be a blur.  I still look at her and think she’s as little as when she was born.  For some reason when Jack turned 1, I thought he was 5.  He seems so much older and I just want Charlie to stay my baby forever.   I can’t tell you how many conversations I’ve had with strangers that involve how fast their kids grew up and to just enjoy the moment.  When you bring home a new baby, it’s so easy to wish for restful nights, more independence, and “the next stage.”  The truth…

10 Things I Wish People Would Have Told Me When I Was Pregnant: PART TWO

Posted by | LENS, Lifestyle, Pregnancy Lifestyle | No Comments

6. It’s a different kind of love.  People used to tell me “Just wait. When you have that baby, you’ll love it more than your husband.”  It scared me, honestly.  I didn’t want to love anyone more than my husband.  What they were saying is false.  I don’t love my kids more than my husband, but I also don’t love my husband more than my kids.  It’s a completely different kind of love.  You love your kids no matter what.  That’s why it’s called “unconditional love”; however, you love your husband more than you loved him before you had kids because you see what the two of you are capable of…bringing life into the world.  It’s an unbelievable thing.  You’ll love both your kids and your husband an extreme amount, but in different ways. 7.  Everyone loves giving pregnant women advice; don’t listen to most of it. I once had a…

Oh, The Glow

Posted by | Pregnancy Lifestyle | No Comments

So I hear some pregnant women experience this amazing phenomenon where their skin literally glows. Me? Well, I’m more of a ‘still puking at 24 weeks’ kind of woman. This glow people speak of? I wish I had it and since I’m not one of the fortunate ones, I’ve learned how to fake it…and you can, too.

BPA

Posted by | LENS, Lifestyle, Pregnancy Lifestyle | No Comments

When shopping for baby products you’ll start to notice a lot of packaging says “BPA Free”.  BPA is commonly found in plastics, the lining inside of can foods and formula, and receipt paper.  Pregnant or not, BPA is not safe to ingest. Recently the FDA’s National Toxicology Program reported “recent studies provide reason for some concern about the potential effects of BPA on the brain, behavior, and prostate gland of fetuses, infants and children”. New results from mouse studies show that prenatal exposure to BPA can result in low birth weight followed by overcompensating growth leading to obesity, which is indirectly related to early onset puberty.  Studies also show a link between BPA exposure and breast cancer in girls.  Even after these studies were presented, the FDA rejected a petition to ban BPA.  Bottom line, avoid plastic and canned food products. Ways to reduce BPA from your house while pregnant…

Finding Out

Posted by | LENS, Lifestyle, Pregnancy Lifestyle | No Comments

You know that moment you find out you’re pregnant and you think, I can’t wait to tell everyone! That thought is soon interrupted by several more thoughts along the lines of Who do I tell first? How long do I wait to tell everyone? If I tell one person, I have to tell everyone. Do I have to tell my boss? I need to call a doctor. My doctor’s office isn’t even open right now. Those thoughts soon become overwhelming so you decide to pause and start thinking about what this means for yourself and most importantly…your baby. Now those thoughts start rushing through your brain. What can’t I eat? What am I supposed to eat? How much do I need to eat? When do I get to start eating a lot? Can I work out? Should I work out? What does this mean for my job? I need to…

Pregnancy Regrets

Posted by | LENS, Lifestyle, Pregnancy Lifestyle | No Comments

While I don’t live with many regrets (I love planning for the future; hate reminiscing about the past – mostly because I get depressed thinking about how quickly life goes), there are a few things I regret not doing while I was pregnant with Charlotte.  I always stress how different your first pregnancy is in comparison to the rest of your pregnancies because it’s all about you the first time around.  It’s so easy to plan your day/week/life when you have no other little human whose life depends on you.  While I was pregnant with Jack, I kept a journal of how I was feeling, had professional maternity photos taken*, and was religious about taking weekly bump pictures.  I didn’t do any of these things during my pregnancy with Charlotte.  It’s just so much harder to remember/schedule/be awake for those minor details. Minor details I really wish I had paid…
